TOEFL iBT and TOEFL Essentials are two different test formats offered by ETS:
- TOEFL iBT:
- The traditional and more widely accepted format
- Longer test (about 3 hours)
- More in-depth assessment of academic English skills
- Taken at authorized test centers
- Scores range from 0-120 (total)
- TOEFL Essentials:
- Newer, shorter format (about 1.5 hours)
- Tests both academic and general English
- Taken at home with online proctoring
- More affordable option
- Scores range from 1-12 (total)
- Gaining acceptance but not as widely recognized as iBT
Our coaching programs primarily focus on TOEFL iBT as it is more widely accepted by universities and institutions worldwide. However, we can also provide guidance for TOEFL Essentials if that format better suits your needs.
For the TOEFL iBT test:
- Each of the four sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing) is scored on a scale of 0-30
- The total score is the sum of the four section scores, ranging from 0-120
- Reading and Listening sections are scored by computer
- Speaking and Writing sections are evaluated by human raters using standardized scoring rubrics
Score interpretation:
- Advanced (22-30 per section): Fully operational command of the language
- High-Intermediate (15-21 per section): Generally effective command of the language
- Low-Intermediate (11-14 per section): Partial command of the language
- Basic (0-10 per section): Limited ability to use the language
Most universities require a minimum total score between 80-100, with some programs requiring minimum scores in each section as well.
The preparation time for TOEFL varies depending on several factors:
- Current English proficiency level: If you already have a good command of English, you might need just 4-6 weeks to familiarize yourself with the test format and develop test-taking strategies. If your English skills need significant improvement, 2-3 months of preparation might be necessary.
- Target score: Higher target scores typically require more preparation time. For example, achieving a score of 100+ often requires more intensive preparation than aiming for an 80.
- Learning pace: Individual learning styles and speeds vary. Some students grasp concepts quickly, while others need more time for practice and reinforcement.
- Study intensity: The number of hours you can dedicate per week significantly impacts your preparation timeline. Full-time preparation will naturally yield faster results than studying a few hours per week.
Our diagnostic assessment at the beginning of the program helps determine the optimal preparation timeline for your specific situation. We offer programs of varying durations (4-6 weeks) to accommodate different needs and starting levels.
Our comprehensive TOEFL preparation package includes:
- Course Books: Specially designed study materials covering all four sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing) with detailed explanations and examples
- Practice Workbooks: Section-wise exercises and drills for targeted practice
- Mock Tests: Full-length practice tests that simulate the actual exam experience
- Speaking Templates: Structural frameworks for different types of speaking tasks
- Writing Templates: Structural frameworks for both integrated and independent writing tasks
- Vocabulary Resources: Academic word lists and usage examples
- Digital Resources: Access to our online learning platform with additional practice materials, video lessons, and interactive exercises
- Performance Analytics: Detailed reports on your progress and areas for improvement
All materials are regularly updated to reflect the latest exam patterns and question types. Our resources are designed to provide comprehensive coverage of all aspects of the TOEFL test.
Required TOEFL scores vary depending on the institution and program:
- Undergraduate programs: Typically require total scores between 70-100, with most universities accepting scores of 80+
- Graduate programs: Usually require total scores between 80-100, with many programs requiring 90+
- Competitive programs (Medicine, Law, etc.): May require higher scores, often 100+ with minimum section scores of 25
- Community colleges: May accept lower scores, sometimes as low as 60-70
Many universities also specify minimum scores for each section, typically around 20-22 for each of the four sections.
It's important to check the specific requirements of your target institutions, as they can vary significantly. Our counselors can provide guidance on the requirements for specific universities and programs, and our coaching is tailored to help you achieve these targets.
