Reading Tasks:

• Reading: Fill in the Blanks: Complete a text by dragging words into blanks

The Reading section is timed as a whole, and you can manage your time across different questions.

This part assesses your listening skills through various question types.

Listening Tasks:

• Summarize Spoken Text: Listen to a recording and summarize it in 50-70 words
• Multiple-choice, Choose Multiple Answers: Listen and select multiple correct responses
• Fill in the Blanks: Listen and type missing words in a transcript
• Highlight Correct Summary: Select the summary that best captures the recording
• Multiple-choice, Choose Single Answer: Listen and select one correct response
• Select Missing Word: Complete the recording with the missing word or phrase
• Highlight Incorrect Words: Identify words in the transcript that differ from the recording
• Write from Dictation: Type a sentence exactly as you hear it

PTE Academic uses a scoring scale from 10-90 points:

• Communicative Skills Scores: Separate scores for Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing (10-90 points each)
• Enabling Skills Scores: Grammar, Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, Spelling, Vocabulary, and Written Discourse (10-90 points each)
• Overall Score: Reflects your overall English language ability (10-90 points)

Many questions test multiple skills. For example, "Re-tell Lecture" contributes to both your listening and speaking scores.

The test uses automated scoring technology, including speech recognition software and AI algorithms, to provide objective and consistent results.

PTE Academic differs from other English proficiency tests in several key ways:

• Computer-based testing: PTE Academic is entirely computer-based, including the speaking section, which is recorded and assessed by AI algorithms rather than human examiners.
• Fast results: Results are typically available within 48 hours, much faster than many other tests.
• Integrated skills assessment: Many tasks assess multiple skills simultaneously, reflecting real-life language use.
• Objective scoring: The automated scoring system eliminates human bias and provides consistent evaluation.
• Single test session: The entire test is completed in one 3-hour session, unlike some tests that require separate days for different components.
• Unlimited attempts: You can take the test as many times as needed, with only a 5-day waiting period between attempts.

The preparation time for PTE Academic varies depending on several factors:

• Current English proficiency level: If you already have a good command of English, you might need just 3-4 weeks to familiarize yourself with the test format and develop test-taking strategies. If your English skills need significant improvement, 2-3 months of preparation might be necessary.
• Target score: Higher target scores typically require more preparation time. For example, achieving a score of 79+ often requires more intensive preparation than aiming for a 65.
• Familiarity with computer-based tests: If you're comfortable with technology and have experience with computer-based tests, you may adapt more quickly to the PTE Academic format.
• Study intensity: The number of hours you can dedicate per week significantly impacts your preparation timeline. Full-time preparation will naturally yield faster results than studying a few hours per week.

Required PTE Academic scores vary depending on the institution, program, and country:

For University Admission:

• Undergraduate programs: Typically require scores between 50-65
• Postgraduate programs: Usually require scores between 58-79
• Competitive programs (Medicine, Law, etc.): May require higher scores, often 79+

For Immigration:

• Australia: Different visa categories require different scores, typically ranging from 30-79 depending on the points needed
• New Zealand: Skilled Migrant Category typically requires scores of 65+
• Canada: Express Entry system accepts PTE Academic scores, with higher scores earning more points in the Comprehensive Ranking System

Many institutions and immigration authorities also specify minimum scores for each communicative skill (Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing).
