About IELTS
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the world's most popular English language proficiency tests for higher education and global migration. It assesses all four language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
IELTS Academic
Designed for those applying for higher education or professional registration in an English-speaking environment.
- University admissions
- Professional certifications
- Higher education programs
IELTS General Training
Suitable for those planning to undertake non-academic training, gain work experience, or for immigration purposes.
- Migration to English-speaking countries
- Work experience programs
- Secondary education & training courses
IELTS Test Format
The IELTS test consists of four sections, each assessing a different language skill. The total test time is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.
The Listening section consists of four recorded monologues and conversations. You will answer 40 questions based on these recordings.
- Section 1: A conversation between two people in an everyday social context
- Section 2: A monologue set in an everyday social context
- Section 3: A conversation between up to four people in an educational or training context
- Section 4: A monologue on an academic subject
Question types include multiple choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labeling, form completion, note completion, table completion, flow-chart completion, summary completion, and sentence completion.
The Reading section includes three long passages with a total of 40 questions. The passages are taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers.
Academic Reading: Texts are authentic and taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers. They are written for a non-specialist audience and deal with academic topics of general interest.
General Training Reading: Texts are taken from notices, advertisements, official documents, booklets, newspapers, and magazines. These reflect the types of materials you would encounter on a daily basis in an English-speaking environment.
Question types include multiple choice, identifying information (True/False/Not Given), identifying writer's views/claims (Yes/No/Not Given), matching information, matching headings, matching features, matching sentence endings, sentence completion, summary completion, note completion, table completion, flow-chart completion, diagram label completion, and short-answer questions.
The Writing section consists of two tasks. You must complete both tasks.
Academic Writing:
- Task 1: Describe visual information (graph, table, chart, or diagram) in your own words (minimum 150 words)
- Task 2: Write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem (minimum 250 words)
General Training Writing:
- Task 1: Write a letter requesting information or explaining a situation (minimum 150 words)
- Task 2: Write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem (minimum 250 words)
Task 2 contributes twice as much as Task 1 to the Writing score. Responses are evaluated based on task achievement, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy.
The Speaking section is a face-to-face interview with an examiner. It is recorded and consists of three parts:
- Part 1 (4-5 minutes): Introduction and interview. The examiner asks general questions about familiar topics such as home, family, work, studies, and interests.
- Part 2 (3-4 minutes): Individual long turn. You are given a task card with a topic and points to include in your talk. You have one minute to prepare and then speak for 1-2 minutes. The examiner may ask one or two questions after you finish.
- Part 3 (4-5 minutes): Two-way discussion. The examiner asks further questions connected to the topic in Part 2, allowing for a deeper discussion of more abstract ideas and issues.
Your performance is evaluated based on fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation.

IELTS Academic and General Training tests differ primarily in their purpose and content:
- IELTS Academic: Designed for people applying for higher education or professional registration in an English-speaking environment. The test content reflects the features of academic language and assesses whether you're ready to begin studying or training.
- IELTS General Training: Intended for those planning to undertake non-academic training or work experience, or for immigration purposes to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK. The test focuses on basic survival skills in broad social and workplace contexts.
The Listening and Speaking sections are the same for both tests, but the Reading and Writing sections differ in content and difficulty:
- Reading: Academic uses texts from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers, while General Training uses materials you would encounter in everyday life (notices, advertisements, newspapers).
- Writing: Academic Task 1 requires describing visual information (graph, table, chart), while General Training Task 1 involves writing a letter. Task 2 is similar for both but may have slightly different expectations.
Our counselors can help you determine which test is appropriate for your specific goals.
IELTS results are reported on a 9-band scale, with each band corresponding to a specified competence level in English:
- Band 9: Expert user - complete command of the language
- Band 8: Very good user - fully operational command with only occasional inaccuracies
- Band 7: Good user - operational command with occasional inaccuracies
- Band 6: Competent user - generally effective command with some inaccuracies
- Band 5: Modest user - partial command with many mistakes
- Band 4: Limited user - basic competence limited to familiar situations
- Band 3: Extremely limited user - conveys and understands only general meaning
- Band 2: Intermittent user - severe difficulties in understanding and expression
- Band 1: Non-user - essentially has no ability to use the language
- Band 0: Did not attempt the test
You receive individual band scores for Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, as well as an Overall Band Score that is the average of these four. Scores are reported in whole and half bands (e.g., 6.0, 6.5, 7.0).
Most universities and immigration authorities specify minimum overall and individual section scores required for admission or visa purposes.
The preparation time for IELTS varies depending on several factors:
- Current English proficiency level: If you already have a good command of English, you might need just 4-6 weeks to familiarize yourself with the test format and develop test-taking strategies. If your English skills need significant improvement, 3-6 months of preparation might be necessary.
- Target band score: Higher target scores typically require more preparation time. For example, achieving a band 7.0 or higher often requires more intensive preparation than aiming for a 6.0.
- Learning pace: Individual learning styles and speeds vary. Some students grasp concepts quickly, while others need more time for practice and reinforcement.
- Study intensity: The number of hours you can dedicate per week significantly impacts your preparation timeline. Full-time preparation will naturally yield faster results than studying a few hours per week.
Our diagnostic assessment at the beginning of the program helps determine the optimal preparation timeline for your specific situation. We offer programs of varying durations (4-8 weeks) to accommodate different needs and starting levels.
Our comprehensive IELTS preparation package includes:
- Course Books: Specially designed study materials covering all four modules (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) with detailed explanations and examples

All materials are regularly updated to reflect the latest exam patterns and question types. Our resources are designed to provide comprehensive coverage of all aspects of the IELTS test.
Required IELTS scores vary depending on the institution, program, and country:
For University Admission:
- Undergraduate programs: Typically require an overall band score of 6.0-6.5, with no individual module below 5.5-6.0
- Postgraduate programs: Usually require an overall band score of 6.5-7.0, with no individual module below 6.0-6.5
- Competitive programs (Medicine, Law, etc.): May require higher scores, often 7.0 or above
For Immigration:
- Canada: Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) levels correspond to specific IELTS scores. For Express Entry, scores typically range from 6.0-9.0 depending on the skill level category
- Australia: Requirements vary by visa subclass, typically ranging from 5.0-8.0
- New Zealand: Usually requires a minimum score of 6.5 for skilled migration
- UK: Requirements vary by visa type, typically ranging from 4.0-7.0
Our counselors can provide specific information about the requirements for your target institutions or immigration programs, and our coaching is tailored to help you achieve these specific targets.
